Walk Light – 64th Ave and Martindale Gate
I received a concern from residents in Martindale about the length of the Walk Light across 64th Ave. Please find below the response from the city of Calgary.
“We have reviewed the signal timings for 64th Avenue and Martindale Gate NE. The time provided for the WALK will remain the same and the Flashing DON’T WALK time will be increased. The WALK light will allow people to step off the curb and start walking across the street. After the WALK time is completed, the signal will begin to flash DON’T WALK. Most pedestrians will not have made it all the way across the street by this time. This is how the signal is supposed to function. If the pedestrian has already started walking and is in the crosswalk, they may finish crossing. Signals are timed to allow plenty of time for pedestrians who have already started crossing to safely finish while the signal is flashing.”
Left Hand Turn Signal from 64th Ave to Martindale Gate – the city’s response to the complaint.
The city does not support a left hand turn signal to alleviate traffic turning left into Martindale. The city constructed the intersection to move traffic and they will not change the configuration of the lights at this time.
Martindale Drive – north to Saddle Towne Circle
Speeding/street racing: Over the course of the last three months we have received several complaints about the speeding and street racing on Martindale Drive.
There are other concerns along Martindale Drive also – trying to cross from the bus stop is next to impossible as during rush hour the traffic is non-stop. A crosswalk may be the next request. We phoned the Alderman Jim Stevenson’s office and have requested help with this problem. The community association has received a 48-page Traffic Calming document. A solution presented to the community association will be installation of SLOW signs.
Currently there are on Martindale Boulevard in front of Crossing Park School and we have asked they be moved to Martindale Drive. This slow sign tells driver’s how fast they are driving. The other tactic we took is to phone District 5 to report the cars that were racing. We got two license plate numbers and so District 5 has followed up with those drivers. The problem with street racing is that someone innocent will get hurt. It’s also noisy and keeps residents awake when the cars are racing.
As part of the solution the Traffic Department has asked the community association to work with residents, read thru the Traffic Calming Solutions Policy. We can petition for calming measures. This may take some time to work with residents.
The website below can be viewed and so if you have concerns please visit the city’s website. http://www.calgary.ca/DocGallery/BU/trans_planning/transportation_solutions/traffic_calming_policy.pdf
Graffiti on 64th Ave – we received several complaints about the graffiti and the MCA board explored the solutions. 311 was called and the fence is on private property. The cement fence was constructed by the developer when the homes were show homes. The owner of the homes where the cement fence sits is responsible for the maintenance of the fence. Some fences that were left behind by developers are now becoming problems. There’s a new Land Use Bylaw that will come into effect June 1, 2008 where developers can not use this type of fence. The new fencing needs to be maintenance free material. The graffiti was cleaned.
The MCA board would like to let residents know that we are trying to listen to complaints and help residents deal with them the most effective route within the city bylaws.
