President’s Message – Saddle Ridge

By Ron Rennie

The SRCA will be holding a Soccer registration April 19, 2008 This will be a community run league this year, plus we will be holding several soccer clinics. Our partner for this program in Saddle Ridge is Stephan Horbay and his background is very impressive.

Stephan is the founder of the Grassroots Sports and Recreation Association of Calgary, a Program Coordinator for the Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth, and a former ESL teacher. Since 2006, Stephan has been involved with North East Calgary’s immigrant youth population – running after school programs and free soccer clinics through partnerships with communities, schools and initiatives such as the Teenzone project.

With over 20 years of experience coaching, playing with and managing soccer clubs in Canada, England, New Zealand and South Korea, Stephan brings a wealth of experience in player development, youth leadership and soccer skills to the Saddleridge Community. He’s also currently an accredited referee with the Alberta Soccer Association, a Calgary United Soccer Association player and a Calgary Minor Soccer Association coach. Thanks to Stephan we will have a great program to offer the youth in the Saddle Ridge area.

Make sure you register on April 19 at the Saddle Ridge Community Hall. For more information email soccer@mysrca.org

The North East Centre of Community Society (NECCS) held a news conference on February 5, 2008 to announce that the centre now has a corporate sponsor in Genesis Corp. and the centre will be known as the Genesis Centre of Community Wellness. What a bold move on behalf of this company.

The SRCA also sponsored their share of the project with a cheque for $125,000. You can read more on this in the next edition of Community Connection.

Our annual membership drive is once again in full swing. If you have not renewed your membership or if you have never had a family membership, this is the year to get one. It’s only $10. Email the SRCA at saddleridgecommunity@shaw.ca.

The pond clean up on Tuesday, April 21, (Earth Day), from 6-8 p.m. (Sunset is 7:45.)

Speaking of the clean up, we have had many comments in the Saddle Ridge area about the entrance ways into Saddle Ridge. We are attempting to get families who live near to monitor these areas to keep them looking good. If you or anyone you know of could help it would benefit the whole community. The City of Calgary does provide this extra service but it comes at a great expense to all residents of that particular community.

We are currently investigating the possibility of hosting a Movie in the Park; more details will follow. The most likely date is sometime in August 2008.

Help keep Saddle Ridge beautiful and pick up that garbage
