The spring like weather we have been experiencing in April and May has really put a damper on some of our community programs, namely the Annual Pond Clean-up that was scheduled for Earth Day April 21st – just a little bit of snow that day. This event will not be rescheduled until next year. In the mean time you can get involved with that theme and help keep Saddle Ridge beautiful by picking up that garbage, even if it’s not yours. Make this a year long practice. The Saddle Ridge Community Association started a soccer league this year. The two fields in Saddle Ridge and one in Taradale were just released into the city’s inventory for use by parks and recreation. These fields once constructed, must have a chance for the grass to establish itself and must sit for a period of two years before being used. That time was up this year, and the Community Association thought it would be a good time to see if soccer was popular in this area. There were two registration dates and from these we had 160 youth register. This most certainly taxed our readiness; we were not at all prepared for anywhere close to these numbers. After many phone calls and schedule changes, the soccer program is alive and well in Saddle Ridge. A special thanks to Bernadette Bourke, who has done the majority of the phoning and Stephan Horbay, our coach, for their tremendous commitment to this wonderful program. And who can forget about all the parent volunteers.? You are the reason that we can offer this program to all the youth in this area. Again Mother Nature provided us with some untimely weather and the first week of scheduled soccer had to be cancelled due to extremely bad weather. The second week looks like it will finally start to get a little nicer and we can get on with our program.
I hope to see you at the 3rd Annual Saddle Ridge Pond Party June 21st. We have planned for a nice warm day! For further details see the ad in this issue.
On the seniors front, Greg, Doug and Ben organized a bus tour to Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump for May 24th, 2008 and it is my understanding that they have come close to filling all 47 seats. Way to go, and hopefully we will have a picture or two in next month’s Community Connection.
Our Movie-in-the-Park is quickly becoming a reality. The date is August 17th. The location for this event will be the parking lot of the new Saddle Ridge Safeway. This will be a great family event, much like the old drive in movie. All you have to do is bring your own chair and leave the car at home.
I hope you are enjoying your new community publication. The publisher Marshall Stevenson, has been working extremely hard to put out a quality monthly publication to keep all the community residents North of McKnight Blvd. informed about all the community happenings. Nice work Marshall, I read mine every month.
Remember to drive safely. School will be out soon and that means a lot of children out at all times of the day. CC
