President’s Message – Martindale

By Terry-lyn Martin

Hello to all Martindale Residents and North of McKnight area Residents.

This is our first combined issue with the communities North of McKnight which provides an exciting opportunity to reinstate the community newsletter for Martindale. We would like to welcome SPRY Design as our new publisher. Martindale looks forward to working with the other community associations North of McKnight to provide you with what’s happening in our communities. Below are some highlights from January and the year 2008.

Martindale, once again, is looking at great expansion and achievements in 2008 and will definitely be really busy. During the upcoming year we will have opportunities for Martindale residents to volunteer.

On January 24, 2008 Martindale Association held it’s Annual General Meeting which was a great success and the Saddle Ridge Hall was utilized. At the AGM, elections for the 2008 term were held and the residents were informed of the happenings of the year 2007.

LRT Extension
The LRT will be extended into Martindale and the City of Calgary Transportation Infrastructure (TI) staff and the community representatives will continue to work on the extension. The City held two open houses in December 2007 at Crossing Park School and obtained valuable feedback from residents of Martindale.

This extension will be a first for the city and the community of Martindale as we will have a walk on station right in the community and two level crossings. The crossings will pose a challenge as the City will have to educate residents on the safety of the crossings, however there are several level LRT crossings around the city and they are very safe. When the arms are down, lights are flashing and bells are sounding, no one should be attempting to cross the tracks. The community association will be committed to working with the City of Calgary TI committee, Alderman Jim Stevenson’s office, and Crossing Park School to ensure that we are getting the safety message out to all residents.

NECCS
2008 will be an exciting year for the NECCS committee. Martindale Community Association is a founding member of the NE Centre of Community Society and we are closer to our goal of a recreational/community centre than ever before. We will be hosting the 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Country Hills Golf Course on August 6, 2008 and we invite volunteers or golfers to participate. It is a charity tournament so the fees are comparable to other charity tournaments in the city. All monies raised go toward the building of our new complex. There will be exciting announcements about our facility throughout the year.

Events
Martindale will be hosting Movie in the Park and a Casino May 10 & 11, 2008 at Casino Calgary. Please see the Calendar of Events or the Volunteer Opportunities for more information.

In summary Martindale is still one of the most affordable communities to reside in and with all the new amenities that have been built this last year we are becoming very self sufficient. We will see the opening of the Bell Express Office building in Saddle Ridge. Later in the year and the opening of the Oliver Bowen LRT maintenance building which is currently being finished adjacent to the McKnight-Westwinds station. These two new buildings will add value to our properties; where else in the city could you live and walk to work? The LRT extension will also add value to your property.

The new Martindale board looks forward to working with you as residents over the next year.

Please come out and attend an event or meeting. The MCA would like to meet you at any of the events.
