The Spirit of Volunteering

We hope that all of the residents within our three communities are enjoying our new community news magazine. This and many other activities are run and supported by our tireless volunteers. Volunteers play a vital role in all aspects of life. It’s so important to give a little of yourself and the rewards far outweigh the effort that was put in. Even if you may think it will not make a difference, it will and the whole community will reap the rewards.

CSRA News

It is spring and the lake fees are due. We would like to thank the majority of our residents for having their fees paid by the due date of April 1, 2008.

Of our 1,474 homeowners, all but five have paid their fees for last year. The lawyers are in the process of collecting them. Collection by the lawyers is a very costly process for the delinquent homeowner as they not only have to pay the fee, but they pay all legal costs, administration charges and interest from the due date at 5% over prime.

President’s Message – Martindale

As we start April it is with great sadness that we say goodbye to the Shiraz Shariff as our MLA. Mr. Shariff will be endeavoring to continue with a meaningful career and give back to the community as he has always done. I have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Shariff as a volunteer for the past several years and I have the utmost respect for his integrity and honesty. During his tenure as our MLA his quiet leadership style helped all groups of residents, to ensure our quality of life was respected and we could live in safe and productive communities. Mr. Shariff it is a great loss to Calgary McCall and we would like to wish him every success in the years to follow.

Bylaw Bulletin: Spring Cleaning

When the promise of spring is in the air, many Calgarians think about cleaning and organizing their garages, basements and yards. Here are a few important bylaws to guide you through this annual ritual:

  • In your backyard there can be no accumulation of loose garbage, bottles or cans, household furniture or goods, automobile parts, equipment or appliance parts, yard waste including grass, tree cuttings visible from outside of your property.
  • Materials that create unpleasant odours or attract pests are prohibited from being stored on private property. This includes animal parts and feces.
  • Property owners/occupants are responsible for maintaining and keeping tidy the back of their property up to the middle of the alleyway.
  • Chemical waste, oil, batteries and oversized items will not be accepted if left out for garbage collection.
  • Garbage should be set out for collection no earlier than 7:00 p.m. the night before and no later than 7:00 a.m. on the morning of your collection day.
  • Garbage bags or containers and their contents must weigh less than 20kg (44lbs) and bundles of more than 1.25m (4ft) in length will not be picked up.

Please take the time to be a responsible citizen and dispose of your waste and unwanted items correctly. The Waste & Recycling website has more information on how to package materials for pickup and on proper disposal methods, www.calgary.ca/waste. Residents who store or improperly dispose of items in laneways or streets are at risk of being fined.

Community Cleanups are a great way to partner with The City and your community to clean your community greenspaces and alleyways. For more information on hosting a Community Cleanup, call 3-1-1 and ask to speak to an Animal & Bylaw Services’ Community Liaison Advisor.

Information on The City of Calgary bylaws can be found by visiting our website at www.calgary.ca/animalservices and clicking on “Bylaw Services” or you can call 3-1-1.

President’s Message – Falconridge/Castleridge

My name is Pat Buchanan, and I am the newly elected President of the Falconridge/Castleridge Community Association. This role will be a great challenge and a rewarding experience for me. I will get to work with some great and experience board members who collectively have given over 35 years in service to the Falconridge/Castleridge Community Association. Having only lived in Falconridge since 2002, I am definitely the “new kid on the block”.

A Message from Ward 3 Alderman Jim Stevenson

CURBSIDE RECYCLING
The media has been reporting on the changes I have recently proposed to the City’s curbside recycling program. I want to make it very clear that I believe Calgary needs regular, curbside collection of recyclable materials, including organics (which will come later),and I don’t want this service delayed in any way. However, I do have some serious concerns about the program in its present form.

Voting can be healthy

Have you ever thought that performing a simple task like taking time out to exercise your right as a citizen could be healthy? Let me explain. Of late there has been heavy emphasis on the connection between physical exercise, decreasing stress in life and the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. It is true that exercising your right is not exactly the same as working out on a treadmill, but deriving a sense of satisfaction, knowing you can make a difference with a single vote, can be a factor which results in a stress reduction. Doing good things, makes you feel happy and all doctors will admit happiness does play a major part in a healthy lifestyle. A little far fetched but true none-the-less.

NE LRT Extension to Saddle Ridge

In late 2007 residents in Calgary’s northeast enjoyed the opening of a new LRT extension to the McKnight-Westwinds Station. This extension provides public transportation to 48,000 Calgarians in our growing city. Many residents in the area are already taking advantage of the convenience of having new LRT service closer to home.
